Glacier in the Alps Wikimedia Commons

Earth could be entering a new Ice Age within the next millennium, but it might not, the deep freeze averted by warming from increased carbon dioxide emissions. Humans could be thwarting the next glacial inception, a new study says.

Even in the comparatively long time scales of Earth history, we're kind of overdue for another ice age - our current Holocene era has lasted about 11,600 years, roughly 600 years longer than the average interglacial (between-ice-age) periods of the past. If atmospheric CO2 levels were lower, the next ice age might have started sometime within the next 1,000 years, according to researchers from University College London and Cambridge University.

Their conclusion is based in part on abrupt temperature changes in the overall temperature contrast between Greenland and Antarctica, according to a Cambridge news release. The North Atlantic would cool rapidly while Antarctica warms, fluctuations that would only happen if expanding ice sheets were calving icebergs huge enough to impact ocean circulation. These temperature see-saws can therefore be used to pinpoint the activation of a new ice age, a "glacial inception."

Chronis Tzedakis from UC London and colleagues examined our present conditions, including temperature averages and solar radiation strength, and found a close analogue to the present, an era called Marine Isotope Stage 19, or about 780,000 years ago. The eras have a similar astronomical configuration and climate, although their CO2 trajectories are pretty different (ours is on the rise).

A phenomenon called insolation was a key factor here. Insolation is the seasonal and latitudinal distribution of solar radiation, which changes a tiny bit over tens of thousands of years due to tiny variations in Earth's orbit around the sun. These little differences are one of the factors that can help trigger a cooling event, cascading toward an ice age. The insolation minimum in the MIS19 era was similar to our own, so it's a valid analogy, the researchers say.

The team applied their glacial inception fingerprinting method to MIS19, looking at ice core samples, plankton remains and debris that would have floated on the encroaching ice, and determined at what point the glacial inception would have started. Then they compared that time frame to the Holocene time frame.

"Taking the [current era] to MIS19c analogy to its logical conclusion implies that the current interglacial would be nearing its end," the researchers write. If, that is, atmospheric CO2 levels were comparable to the MIS19 era. Which they aren't. This shows that while insolation is an important ingredient, apparently it's not as potent an ice age determinant as CO2.

"The current insolation forcing and lack of new ice growth mean that orbital-scale variability will not be moderating the effects of anthropogenically induced global warming," the authors conclude.

The paper is published in the early online version of Nature Geoscience.

The musty smell is most likely cellulose decay. Since the mid-19th century, when papermakers began using groundwood pulp in place of cotton or linen, most paper has contained an unstable compound called lignin, which breaks down into acids and makes paper very brittle. Since 2001, the Library of Congress has treated at least 250,000 books every year with magnesium oxide. The chemical deacidifies paper and slows decay.

Lorraine Gibson, a chemist at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, runs a project called Heritage Smells that will identify decay in its earliest stages. She is working on a handheld mass spectrometer, a sort of artificial nose that locates the molecules that cause the musty smell.

Molecules move down a flight tube, and the movement through the tube helps identify the mass of the molecule. Once researchers have identified the molecules that speed decay, they can work to stop it.

The U.S. spent some $400 billion on research and development last year, well over twice the amount invested by China, its next closest rival. But as the U.S. rolls back research budgets in 2012, China will take another approach: When its current leaders step down next fall, their replacements will oversee a major increase in science spending.

It will be the latest in a long series of efforts to modernize. Premier Deng Xiaoping opened China to foreign trade in the 1980s, bringing market forces to bear on rural production. In the 1990s, president Jiang Zemin oversaw a low-wage production boom in China's coastal factory towns. And current president Hu Jintao has focused on spreading growth to inland cities.

Now the incoming generation of leadership, likely to be headed up by vice president Xi Jinping, is confronted by a paradox. China's rapid growth is imperiling its status as a low-wage manufacturing destination. And that's why its new Five Year Plan calls for spending on R&D to be increased to 2.2 percent of GDP, up from 1.8 percent in 2010. China is investing in industries that will support higher incomes.

The country already has considerable research momentum. A study from the British Royal Society found that China could overtake the U.S. in output of scientific papers by 2013. And next year, its planned Shenzhou 9 and 10 flights will dock with the new Tiangong 1 space lab, cementing China's status as the first new country to achieve an independent manned space program since the days of the U.S.-Soviet space race.

That old rivalry was primarily a zero-sum military competition. But a race for discovery and innovation is ultimately one in which every nation benefits. Faced with cutbacks at home, it will be hard for Americans to avoid the conclusion that this particular rival is pulling closer just in time.

Higgs Search Todd Baxter

in the beginning of the beginning, the exploding hot universe was full of elementary particles, but the particles had no mass. The universe also contained force fields, and one of those fields, the Higgs, cooled and condensed into a quantum liquid. The liquid dragged on the other particles, giving them mass. The liquid rippled, and the ripples formed a new particle, called the Higgs.

It reads like a just-so story. But it's the basis of the Standard Model of physics. And so far, physicists have found every particle the Standard Model has predicted but one: the Higgs itself. Researchers at the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland have been looking for the Higgs for more than a year, and by next winter they will either have found it or they'll know they won't. "It's not obvious," says Andrei Gritsan, a Johns Hopkins University physicist working at the LHC, "which scenario would be more interesting."

Physicists at the LHC look for Higgs particles by smashing other particles into each other so hard that something like a Higgs will appear out of the energy of the collision, leaving its signature in a detector. Previous experiments have suggested that the Higgs does not "live" at energies between 0 and 114 gigaelectron-volts, and physicists have now determined that 145 GeV is the uppermost limit, so they are running out of places to look.

As they collide more and more particles, and detect more and more promising signatures, physicists will become increasingly sure that they've detected a Higgs. By this summer, they will be 95 percent confident, but for physicists that's not good enough. By the end of this year, they will be dead certain one way or the other.

If they do find the Higgs, they will have found something profoundly weird. The Standard Model puts all particles into two camps, those that stick together into matter and those that carry the four forces (electromagnetism, gravity, and the "strong" and "weak" nuclear forces). The Higgs belongs to neither camp, and pushing physicists to define it further gets you nowhere. "Words don't matter here," says Jonathan Bagger, a physicist at Johns Hopkins. "Only math does."

If they don't find it? Maybe it's there but its signature is different. Or maybe the Standard Model has a fatal flaw. And if that's the case, nobody has even a just-so story to account for mass. "It's very exciting," Bagger says. "It's very scary."

The Earth's crust bends and deforms in response to ocean tides, and this barely noticeable warping affects other bodies of water as well as the land, according to a new study. With exacting precision, scientists in the UK have measured the way Loch Ness sloshes around as all of Scotland bends under the strain of the North Sea's tides. The lake could be used like a level to gauge the planet's response to the back-and-forth movement of all its water.

Eliminating the tidal effects of the sun and moon, not to mention hydroelectric facilities, scientists found the 21-mile-long loch surface goes up and down by 1.5 millimeters, according to a report published in the Journal of Geophysical Research. That's because the whole of Scotland heaves in response to ocean tides.

Imagine standing in a pool of water sloshing up to your knees - you can't help but wobble a bit. In the case of the whole of Britain, it's so slight that nobody can feel it, but scientists wanted to measure this loading effect. They turned to Loch Ness, which is the largest lake in Britain by volume and pretty far north, so more exposed to the North Sea's tidal thrashings.

Philip Woodworth and colleagues from the UK National Oceanography Centre in Liverpool placed six pressure sensors a few meters under the loch surface and measured the change in the water above them for 201 days, the BBC says. They noticed clear spikes attributable to the moon and sun, but there was a much fainter spike, too - stemming from the tilting of the land. The measurement was precise to one millimeter across the loch's entire surface, quite a feat.

The goal is to use this information to learn something new about the Earth's crust, the team says. Maybe it is more malleable than we thought.

You have to hand it to the Japanese; Last March's Tohoku earthquake and associated tsunami wasn't the first natural (or unnatural, for that matter) disaster to befall the island nation, but as just as before the country isn't simply rebuilding. Instead, it's rethinking and improving upon what was there before. The latest example: Japan's agriculture ministry is building a fully robotic experimental farm on a swath of farmland inundated by the tsunami.

After salt is removed from the soil of the 600 acre plot, the agriculture ministry's plan calls for unmanned tractors to work fields lit by LEDs that will keep insects at bay in lieu of pesticides. The robotic tractors will till, plant, and tend to rice, soybeans, wheat, and various fruits and vegetables that will then also be harvested by their robotic overseers.

Getting more out of each square foot of agricultural real estate isn't just a Japanese imperative, of course. As the global population increases, increasing the per-acre yield of agricultural space is becoming more and more crucial. Leave it to tech-savvy Japan to understand fundamentally that technology is the way forward in farming.

As such, the "Dream Project," as the robo-farm initiative is known, will be built by partners like Panasonic, Hitachi, Fujitsu, NEC, and Sharp--technology companies most of us would probably wouldn't associate with agriculture. But perhaps we should start thinking that way. The Japanese certainly are.

Scientists have produced the world's first chimeric monkeys, developed from stem cells harvested from separate embryos. They contain genetic material from as many as six genomes. The infant rhesus monkeys are totally healthy and could hold great promise for future stem cell research in primates, researchers say. They also carry an interesting and controversial message for future stem cell research: Those cultured stem cell lines in labs throughout this country, such a crucial scientific tool and such a cultural flashpoint, may not be as potent as the ones inside embryos.

The monkeys, named Roku, Hex and Chimero, were born at the Oregon National Primate Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University. They're the result of mashups made from separate rhesus monkey embryos. Researchers took very early stem cells, called totipotent stem cells, from separate developing embryos and basically glued them together, implanting the mixed embryos into surrogate mother monkeys. The cells - from totally different sources - didn't fuse, but worked together in harmony, forming fully fledged, normal, healthy animals. Watch them do baby monkey things in the video below.

A totipotent cell can give rise to a whole animal. Pluripotent stem cells, the type most frequently used in stem cell research, can differentiate into any cell in the body, but can't become a whole animal, and can't make other embryonic tissues like a placenta. Totipotent stem cells are only derived from the very earliest stages of a zygote, mere days after fertilization. In humans, totipotent cells differentiate into pluripotent cells after four days.

Chimeras are nothing new to science - chimeric mice are created all the time to form knockout models with deleted gene sequences. Nobody would ever create a chimeric human, but chimeric mice and other animal models can be used to study diseases and regenerative medicine.

Scientists led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov tried to reproduce the mouse method in monkeys, implanting cultured embryonic cells into existing monkey embryos, but it didn't work. It turns out primate embryos prevent cultured embryonic stem cells from becoming integrated the way they do in mice. This is a surprising and important finding, and Mitalipov said scientists need to study why it's the case.

Dividing Cells in an Early Embryo: © OHSU/Mitalipov Lab

"We need to study not just cultured embryonic stem cells but also stem cells in embryos," he said in a statement. "It's too soon to close the chapter on these cells."

This has implications for ongoing stem cell research. This research suggests that existing embryonic stem cell lines, some of which are two decades old, might not be as potent as the stem cells found inside new embryos. These are used as standards for comparison with induced pluripotent stem cells, a type of adult cell (often derived from skin cells) that can be forced to become a stem cell. But if they aren't implantable in primates, and primates require totipotent zygotic cells, well, this raises some interesting questions.

"If we want to move stem cell therapies from the lab to clinics and from the mouse to humans, we need to understand what these primate cells can and can't do," Mitalipov said. "We need to study them in humans, including human embryos."

The study appears in the early online edition of the journal Cell.
