October 2020 Treasure Hunter Event Tips and Tricks

“IMPORTANT INFO: The pails have changed from the first time this event was done in Spring 2020.

  • The most important thing to note is that the pails that you loot and craft ARE DIFFERENT than the pails from spring. They will look IDENTICAL in your inventory but will drop different things.
  • Old crafted/looted pails will only drop from the Spring list. Newly looted/crafted pails will only drop the Fall lists. The new and the old pails will also not stack in your inventory.
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Only the old pails can be sold. The new fall pails are not sellable or tradeable. So if you see these for sale in a player’s inventory, they are the old spring 2020 pails.
  • Empty pails you bought from vendors and didn’t craft into crafted pails can be used to craft the new pails since patch 22.
  • Open your old pails now. They don’t age like wine. Any that you didn’t craft before, you can now craft them into new pails and get new rewards now. Don’t buy pails from other players, YOU WILL GET SCAMMED.”
  • The cheapest you can buy the empty pails for with max charisma, level 3 hard bargain, and grape mentats is 219c, 656c, and 1925c. –
  • All treasure hunters are also guaranteed legendary. You have a 40% chance of it being a 2* and a 5% chance of it being a 3*. Player level and region has no bearing on the legendary chance.
  • The Crafted Mole Miner Pails (Medium) are the best bang for the buck. You can buy/craft 2 for less than half the cost of an ornate and have a higher chance of hitting a rare plan than with a single ornate pail.
  • Treasure hunter mole miners have a chance to spawn anywhere ANY enemy naturally spawns. This means a group of supermutants that spawn have a chance for one of them to spawn as a treasure hunter instead of a super mutant. So don’t limit your searching to areas where mole miners spawn. Examples: Welch, Camden Park, etc.
  • Vendor inventory of empty pails will reset with a server hop.
  • Treasure Hunters DO NOT spawn inside interior cells. So inside areas like Belching Betty, The Burning Mine, Garrahan HQ, etc.
  • Sell your entire 1400 caps worth to a vendor before buying the pails. You will replenish some caps back to the vendor’s cap pool with your purchase.
  • Scripted enemy spawns DO NOT have a chance to be Treasure Hunters. This means that events, quests, workshop events, etc will not have treasure hunters. Examples: Mount Blair defend waves, Encryptid spawns, A Real Blast, robot spawn pods, etc.
  • If you have a lot of caps on you, Whitespring is the best place to buy as there are 5 faction vendor bots located there.
  • Active treasure hunters will make a radio static tuning sound so listen for it when exploring.
  • If you have multiple accounts or a friend that will help, you can create a new character, transfer 1400 caps worth of stuff to sell to it, clean out a vendor bot caps pool, buy pails, transfer it to your main, delete the new character, and repeat. You can get access to an unlimited amount of caps like this.
  • If hunting on a private server, be aware that after a time (typically 4 hours or so) legendary enemies stop spawning. This means that treasure hunters will also no longer spawn. If you’ve hit several locations with no luck in finding a treasure hunter, server hop.
  • Craft mutation serums to sell to vendor bots to quickly clean out their caps with minimum material use. – You have a 10% chance of getting an Ornate pail and a 27% chance of a regular pail. Otherwise it will be a Dusty pail.
  • The empty pails will no longer be purchasable from vendorbots once the event ends. – The percentage chance of a treasure hunter spawning is set by a server-side global that I’m not able to read. When/if I find this data, I will include it here. Bethesda can change this at will.
  • Crafting pails does not use any of your own items other than the empty pails and some scrap. You cannot pick what goes inside them. They always drop something from the lists above.
  • Keep a close eye on your caps and scrip when opening your pails. You can reach your max and lose any extra if you aren’t careful.
  • You will get a quantity of ammo based on what weapon you have equipped when you ‘open’ the pail. If you have a melee weapon equipped, you’ll get a random choice of common types.
